If you are feeling overwhelmed by the college dorm room shopping list you are definitely not alone!

We know you had the best intentions to start early and stay organized, but as the summer slips away and move in day approaches, you may feel like a deer in headlights.  We have you covered- take a deep breath and read on!

Below are the top items college students will actually need to make the best of dorm room living. We chose items that are not only popular with college students, but are currently in stock.  Online shopping can really help speed along the process and help you check needed items off the list!

We may earn a small fee at no cost to you when you shop through our links. We do this to keep our site ad free. Please know that everything recommended here has been either used by us or well researched over the past five years.

Tips to keep in mind:

  • Remember to check the Residence Life section of the college website for specific room dimensions and prohibited items.
  • If you do not have an Amazon Prime account yet, you can sign up for a college account which gives you six months free, and then a reduced rate on top of perks such as free two day shipping on many items. Sign up here. This will come in handy not only for dorm shopping, but for the entire college years.
  • Do an inventory and see what you already have. You may have items such as towels that you can send and avoid having to buy new ones.
  • Covid-19, Flu, and RSV may unfortunately still be an issue in many parts of the country this school year.  We wrote an article about resources you may want to check out including over the counter medicines to have on hand.
  • Relax- this can be done in time!  Make sure to focus on the absolute must haves first and then add in other items as time permits.  You can always send items to your student after they move in, but they will definitely need some things to get started. Make sure to bookmark this page so you can come back as you shop. Here are the items to consider that are top on college students lists:

Mattress Topper:

The dorm bed serves many functions for college students and therefore it is important to make it as comfortable as possible. College dorm mattresses most often are twin extra long.  The mattress is very thin and hard so having a mattress topper is one item students say is a game changer.  Toppers range in size, but 2-4 inches usually does the trick. Toppers can be expensive, but we have included some great budget choices as well.  The most popular options include:

Premium 3 inch Sleepyhead Topper- Twin XL This mattress topper is making the rounds on social media and is beloved for good reason. It comes with a removable cover and straps to keep it in place. It is on the expensive side but is an excellent choice. You can buy directly here with a 50 dollar discount code ENN50 or buy it on Amazon here which offers good discounts as well.

LUCID 3-inch Ventilated Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper – Twin XL

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR Supreme topper, Twin XL

LINENSPA 3 Inch Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper – Twin XL

Let’s talk dorm room bedding layers which can often seem confusing. The first thing you may want to consider is a zippered encasement that covers the dorm mattress and serves as an added protection from allergens, germs, dust mites and bed bugs. Next comes the mattress toppers discussed above. After that some people add a mattress pad, either waterproof or non-waterproof.

Zipper encasement

Mattress Pad

Waterproof Mattress Pad

Topper Tip: If you get a zippered encasement, do not put the topper directly on the mattress and then the zippered protector. The toppers need to breath so heat and moisture will not build up. Also if the topper slips, this can mattress gripper will help if placed under topper.

If you decide to buy all of these layers the order would be: zipper protector directly on the mattress, mattress gripper, mattress topper, waterproof mattress pad, and finally you would put on the fitted sheet.

Twin XL Sheets:

Dormify offers some great options.  We especially like the Super-Soft T-Shirt Jersey set.  They also offer stylish cotton and microfiberAmazon has some solid choices you will want to check out too including these softs microfiber sheets or these 100 percent cotton sheets.

Comforters/Duvets:

You have two choices: you can use a comforter alone or with a duvet cover. You can use a twin xl size or opt for a full size which will hang down more and cover the under bed storage.  If you want to really cover the storage you can use a long bed skirt like this.  There are so many cute comforters and duvet options to choose from, but here are links to a short list of some college favorites:

Blankets:

We recommend sending a cotton all season blanket and a cozy fleece blanket as well.

Pillows:

Pillows are a personal item and college students may want to take their beloved pillow from home.  However, if its time for a refresh these pillows are a great choice for a hypoallergenic down alternative. They come two per set. For extra protection against allergens, dust mites and bedbugs these washable pillow protectors come in handy. Add some fun decorative throw pillows– but don’t go overboard as too many can be overwhelming.

Back Support:

College students frequently use their beds to study, read and use their laptops so it can become uncomfortable quickly.  Having back support is important and this pillow can help.

Another great option is a WOWMAX wedge pillow which can offer needed support as well.

Headboards:

This is an item that you might consider but can definitely do without. If you raise your bed it does help ensure that items do not fall behind the bed. Here are some to consider:

Tufted headboard

Faux leather headbord

Bevel tacked headboard

Charging headboard

This one has charging capabilities and is therefore more expensive. Check out Dormify for more charging headboard styles.

Bring these zip ties to help attach to the frame

Towels:

These towels from Dormify are a good choice.  They are benzoyl peroxide safe (an ingredient found in many skin care products college students use) which means no staining.  Additionally, they have a loop to hang the towels which comes in handy.

Another popular option is this soft and absorbent set that you can find on Amazon.

Surge Protector:

Surge protectors not only multiply the availability of scarce outlets in dorm rooms, but offer needed protection for valuable laptops and electronics.  Additionally, many colleges do not allow extension cords so this can serve that purpose. Most colleges want the surge protectors to be UL certified. The Belkin USB Power Strip Surge Protector offers 12 outlets and two USB ports with a 6 foot cord is a great option for dorm room living. A long lightening to usb cord will come in handy as well.

Command Hooks:

Command Strips are amazing for dorm rooms.  They are easy to install, durable, useful, and best of all will cause no damage when it is time for move out! You can hang almost anything with them and they come in a variety of sizes, colors and weight ranges.  We recommend a variety pack to get started and check out the other options that you may need here: Command Strips and Hooks

Under Bed Storage:

When storage space is at a premium, under bed storage is crucial.  Some colleges have beds that can be raised or lofted to allow for several containers stacked on top of each other to go underneath.  You may also want to buy risers that have USB and electrical outlets built in. For under bed storage we recommend:

Amazon: Under bed large storage stackable drawers

Amazon: Three Drawer Wide Weave Tower

Container Store: Large tint stackable storage drawers

Target: Three Drawer Wide Tower

If your bed if raised you will need a step stool to help get in and out easily. Either get one that offers storage or get a simple folding option.

If you have a top bunk or a semi raised bed consider the Bed Shelfie– it can be annoying to have to get in and out of bed and you can stash your essentials on the shelf. Another option is a Bedside Caddy.

Night Table:

Depending on the height of your bed and the space available, a night table might offer some much needed storage. This night table comes in white, black or brown and offers USB ports and outlets.

Shower Caddy:

Most college dorms do not have space for toiletries to be stored in shared bathrooms.  Therefore students need to carry their toiletries back and forth with them. This mesh shower caddy is durable and has handles that can be used to hang from a hook.  The black mesh caddy comes in a variety of attractive handle colors.

This plastic shower caddy is also a good choice. The mesh vs plastic debate is split evenly. It is a good idea to get a drying mat to place under the wet shower caddy and/or shower shoes.

Shower Shoes:

Communal Showers call for shower shoes!  If you have spent any time in a dorm you will definitely agree.  Students wear them to and from their dorm room and in the shower.  Some popular antimicrobial options that come in a variety of colors include:

Showaflops Shower Shoes:

Showashoes

Quick Dry Shower Shoes

Slim Flip Flop

Hanging Storage Shelves:

With storage space at a minimum, these hanging storage shelves offer just the storage you may need.  Perfect for shirts, sweaters, or folded pants.

Hangers:

To maximize your hanging space try these ultra slim non slip velvet hangers.

Shoe Rack:

This shoe rack is adjustable and will work well in the closet or dorm room.

Another good option is this over the door organizer which works for shoes or many other items.

Fan:

In most parts of the country a fan is a useful and often necessary dorm room addition even when air conditioning is provided.    The Woozoo Fan is a dorm room favorite- it is small, powerful and quiet.  It oscillates and has five speeds too. They are often out of stock at retailers but can be found on Amazon now.

Another good option is the Lasko Oscillating Tower Fan:

3 Tier Rolling Metal Utility Cart:

This versatile 3 tiered rolling cart has mesh shelves, making it an ideal place to store toiletries.  There are so many other uses for this cart including using as a nightstand or for books, food, makeup, blow dryers, etc.  It comes in several colors and is easy to put together.

Hepa Air Purifier:

Hepa air filters help clean the air from dust, mold, smoke and pollen. If your college student suffers from allergies it may be just what they need. Some college students going to school out of state quickly discover that they have allergies they never knew they had.  This LEVOIT hepa air purifer is just the right size for a dorm room!

Laundry Bag:

For many students this will be the first time they are truly doing their own laundry.  To make the transition easy, make sure they have a portable laundry bag with room to carry detergent too.  This laundry bag is durable, holds a lot of laundry, and is easy to carry. This set of mesh laundry bags are ideal for delicates, masks and other small items.

We also recommend this steamer to get out wrinkles – it is way easier than an iron!

Water Bottles:

This is a must have item for college students!  Many students swear by their Hydro Flasks and Yetis which will keep your drink cold or warm all day. The Stanley Quencher became popular and a viral hit- thanks to TikTok.  They each seem to have a cult following so check them out and see which you like better- they all get the job done well!  They come in an array of colors, sizes and shapes. They all make excellent versions of coffee travel mugs and tumblers as well.

Brita Water Pitcher:

This Brita Water Pitcher is just the right size to fit into a small dorm room refrigerator.

Mini Refrigerator and Microwave:

You can either rent a mini fridge (with or without a microwave) or buy one.  Renting makes it easier to transport and in many colleges it will be delivered right to the room and picked up at the end of the semester. Buying one will be more cost effective though and it can be used for several years if your student will be living on campus.  This Mini Refrigerator with a separate freezer section is just the right size and gets rave reviews. If the dorm allows for microwaves this model is a great choice.  It is priced under 100 dollars, is compact, and works well. We love this mini fridge with freezer retro style too! To add some storage you can try this stand or a whole station like this one. This magnetic paper towel roll and two racks will help maximize storage as well. Don’t forget to stock up on some reusable storage containers, microwave safe dishes, paper plates and plastic utensils.

DustBuster/Stick Vacuum:

This lightweight small Black and Decker hand held cordless Dustbuster is perfect for dorm rooms.  Most colleges have large vacuums you can use if needed but for most college messes this will do the trick. If you want a stick vacuum this 3 in 1 is a great choice!

Cleaning Supplies:

Definitely send some basic cleaning supplies, and then hope they get used!  We recommend keeping it simple and including Clorox disinfecting wipes, paper towels, and an all purpose cleaner. A Swiffer Duster as well as the Dustbuster or vacuum (mentioned above) will come in handy. In terms of laundry detergent, before you buy, make sure to check if pods are allowed and if they use HE machines. Don’t forget to send a tide stick or stain remover.

Shop Laundry Detergent

Coffee Maker:

This Keurig-K mini coffee maker is perfect for dorm room life.  It takes up very little space and comes in great colors, like the pink one pictured here.  Don’t forget to send some K Cup Pods to get started.

Mirror:

You will definitely need a mirror if your dorm does not provide one. This full length mirror is inexpensive and can be hung with command strips.

Makeup mirrors are a must have for certain college students. Here are three great choices for vanity mirrors:

Tri-fold Makeup mirror:

Makeup mirror:

Large makeup mirror:

Trash Can:

It is useful to have a small trash can with a hands free lid for everyday garbage.  This one comes in several colors and is just the right size for dorm room living.

Desk Lamp:

This desk lamp offers USB and wireless charging as well as several brightness settings.  The neck is also flexible allowing you to shine light in a variety of ways.

Floor Lamp:

Some dorm rooms come with adequate lighting, but most need a bit more.  This simple standing lamp will get the job done nicely.

Backpack:

While it is perfectly fine to use an old backpack from high school, sometimes it is time for a fresh start. Here are three popular options that come in a variety of colors:

VASCHY

Jansport

Herschel

Ikea Frakta bags:

These bags are ideal for packing a lot of stuff!  They all store easily for the dorm room pack for the trip home.  Because they have become a cult classic they are often hard to find in stock.  Try here and if not this version works just as well. They are heavy duty and have backpack straps.  Dimpa bags are particularly useful for bedding. You may also want to order Ziploc space bags to fit even more into less space.

Noise Cancelling Headphones:

Sharing a room can be challenging and noise cancelling headphones can help.  Here are some popular options:

Apple Airpod Pro

Bose QuietComfort 35 II

First Aid Kit:

You can buy a first aid kit like this one or make your own.  If you want to do it yourself read this section on how to make one. You can gather itmes in a container like this.  Either way make sure to include instructions for common uses and doses they may not be familiar with. Encourage them to reach out to you and campus medical professionals when needed.  The Ultimate College Student Health Handbook: Your Guide for Everything from Hangovers to Homesickness by pediatrician Dr. Jill Grimes is a helpful resource to include.

First Aid Kit Tip: Take a photo of what you included, so you will remember exactly what they have when you get the call asking what to do or what to take.

If your child takes prescription drugs, plan out how they will get refills. Can their doctor from home prescribe? Can health services? Maybe a local doctor is needed. This is the time to figure this out so they are not without needed prescription drugs.

Many parents are including these items that you might want to consider, but are personal choices: Condoms, Plan B, Narcan

Tool Kit:

A small tool kit is a smart idea.  These tools always come in handy!

Toiletries:

Your college student should take enough to get started and have backups of certain items like toothbrushes.  Also they will need a toothbrush holder and soap dish to put in their shower caddy.  All other items can be bought or ordered as needed during the semester.  Don’t forget to send prescriptions and figure out how your student will get necessary refills.

PhoneSoap:

Phones go everywhere with us and easily pick up germs along the way.  PhoneSoap offers an effective solution to this problem through UV-C technology.

PhoneSoap quickly and easily cleans and sanitizes your electronics, including phones, ear pods, and keys. The PhoneSoap Pro fits all phones and cases and cleans your phone in five minutes while the PhoneSoap 3 takes 10 minutes and fits all phones and most cases.  Additionally, you can charge your phone with the device and you can hear your phone notifications even when it is in the unit.

PhoneSoap

Lock Box:

Communal living calls for a lock box to provide protection for valuables.  Of course it goes without saying that it is a good idea not to bring anything truly valuable to college.  However, this is is a safe place to lock away items such as your passport or some cash.

Humidity Control:

Depending where the college is will depend on what type of humidity control you will need. Some dorms are perpetually damp, in which case a dehumidifier or DampRid will be a welcomed item. Some dorms are incredibly dry making a humidifier essential.

Levoit Humidifier

Pro Breeze Dehumidifier

DampRid
