If you are feeling overwhelmed by the college dorm room shopping list you are definitely not alone!
We know you had the best intentions to start early and stay organized, but as the summer slips away and move in day approaches, you may feel like a deer in headlights. We have you covered- take a deep breath and read on!
Below are the top items college students will actually need to make the best of dorm room living. We chose items that are not only popular with college students, but are currently in stock. Online shopping can really help speed along the process and help you check needed items off the list!
Tips to keep in mind:
- Remember to check the Residence Life section of the college website for specific room dimensions and prohibited items.

- Do an inventory and see what you already have. You may have items such as towels that you can send and avoid having to buy new ones.
- Covid-19, Flu, and RSV may unfortunately still be an issue in many parts of the country this school year. We wrote an article about resources you may want to check out including over the counter medicines to have on hand. Don’t forget to send a supply of masks at a minimum.
Relax- this can be done in time! Make sure to focus on the absolute must haves first and then add in other items as time permits. You can always send items to your student after they move in, but they will definitely need some things to get started. Here are the items to consider that are top on college students lists:
Mattress Topper:
The dorm bed serves many functions for college students and therefore it is important to make it as comfortable as possible. College dorm mattresses most often are twin extra long. The mattress is very thin and hard so having a mattress topper is one item students say is a game changer. Toppers range in size, but 2-4 inches usually does the trick. Toppers can be expensive, but there are some budget choices as well. The most popular options include:

You might also want to buy a waterproof mattress pad to put over the topper which helps protect it. Some people also encase the mattress in a zippered protector first as added protection from allergens, dust mites and bed bugs. If you decide to buy all of these layers the order would be zipper protector on the mattress, mattress topper, waterproof mattress pad, and finally you would put on the fitted sheet.
Topper Tips: You may want to air out the topper before you leave. If you choose to do this then you will have a bulkier item to pack, but it may be preferable.
Twin XL Sheets:
Dormify offers some great options. We especially like the Super-Soft T-Shirt Jersey set. They also offer stylish cotton and microfiber. Amazon has some solid choices you will want to check out too including these softs microfiber sheets or these 100 percent cotton sheets.
Comforters/Duvets:
You have two choices: you can use a comforter alone or with a duvet cover. You can use a twin xl size or opt for a full size which will hang down more and cover the under bed storage. If you want to really cover the storage you can use a long bed skirt like this. There are so many cute comforters and duvet options to choose from, but here are links to a short list of some college favorites:
Blankets:
We recommend sending a cotton all season blanket and a cozy fleece blanket as well.
Pillows:
Pillows are a personal item and college students may want to take their beloved pillow from home. However, if its time for a refresh these pillows are a great choice for a hypoallergenic down alternative. They come two per set. For extra protection against allergens, dust mites and bedbugs these washable pillow protectors come in handy. Add some fun decorative throw pillows– but don’t go overboard as too many can be overwhelming.
Back Support:
College students frequently use their beds to study, read and use their laptops so it can become uncomfortable quickly. Having back support is important and this pillow can help.
Another great option is a WOWMAX wedge pillow which can offer needed support as well.
Towels:
These towels from Dormify are a good choice. They are benzoyl peroxide safe (an ingredient found in many skin care products college students use) which means no staining. Additionally, they have a loop to hang the towels which comes in handy.

Surge Protector:
Surge protectors not only multiply the availability of scarce outlets in dorm rooms, but offer needed protection for valuable laptops and electronics. Additionally, many colleges do not allow extension cords so this can serve that purpose. Most colleges want the surge protectors to be UL certified. Under Bed Storage:
When storage space is at a premium, under bed storage is crucial. Some colleges have beds that can be raised or lofted to allow for several containers stacked on top of each other to go underneath. You may also want to buy risers that have USB and electrical outlets built in. For under bed storage we recommend:

Shower Caddy:
Most college dorms do not have space for toiletries to be stored in shared bathrooms. Therefore students need to carry their toiletries back and forth with them. This versatile 3 tiered rolling cart has mesh shelves, making it an ideal place to store toiletries. There are so many other uses for this cart including using as a nightstand or for books, food, makeup, blow dryers, etc. It comes in several colors and is easy to put together.
Hepa Air Purifier:
Hepa air filters help clean the air from dust, mold, smoke and pollen. If your college student suffers from allergies it may be just what they need. Some college students going to school out of state quickly discover that they have allergies they never knew they had. This LEVOIT hepa air purifer is just the right size for a dorm room!
Laundry Bag:
For many students this will be the first time they are truly doing their own laundry. To make the transition easy, make sure they have a portable laundry bag with room to carry detergent too. Water Bottles:

Brita Water Pitcher:
This Brita Water Pitcher is just the right size to fit into a small dorm room refrigerator.
Mini Refrigerator and Microwave:
You can either rent a mini fridge (with or without a microwave) or buy one. Renting makes it easier to transport and in many colleges it will be delivered right to the room and picked up at the end of the semester. Buying one will be more cost effective though and it can be used for several years if your student will be living on campus. This Mini Refrigerator with a separate freezer section is just the right size and gets rave reviews. If the dorm allows for microwaves this model is a great choice. It is priced under 100 dollars, is compact, and works well. Don’t forget to stock up on some reusable storage containers, microwave safe dishes, paper plates and plastic utensils.
DustBuster/Stick Vacuum:
This lightweight small Black and Decker hand held cordless Dustbuster is perfect for dorm rooms. Most colleges have large vacuums you can use if needed but for most college messes this will do the trick. If you want a stick vacuum this 3 in 1 is a great choice!
Cleaning Supplies:
Definitely send some basic cleaning supplies, and then hope they get used! We recommend keeping it simple and including Clorox disinfecting wipes, paper towels, and an all purpose cleaner. A Swiffer Duster as well as the Dustbuster or vacuum (mentioned above) will come in handy. In terms of laundry detergent, before you buy, make sure to check if pods are allowed and if they use HE machines. Don’t forget to send a tide stick or stain remover.

Mirror:
You will definitely need a mirror if your dorm does not provide one. This full length mirror is inexpensive and can be hung with command strips.
Trash Can:
It is useful to have a small trash can with a hands free lid for everyday garbage. This one comes in several colors and is just the right size for dorm room living.
Desk Lamp:

Floor Lamp:

Ikea Frakta bags:
These bags are ideal for packing a lot of stuff! They all store easily for the dorm room pack for the trip home. Because they have become a cult classic they are often hard to find in stock. Try here and if not this version works just as well. They are heavy duty and have backpack straps. Dimpa bags are particularly useful for bedding. You may also want to order Ziploc space bags to fit even more into less space.
Noise Cancelling Headphones:
Sharing a room can be challenging and noise cancelling headphones can help. Here are some popular options:
First Aid Kit:
You can buy a first aid kit like this one or make your own. If you want to do it yourself read this section on how to make one. Either way make sure to include instructions for common uses and doses they may not be familiar with. Encourage them to reach out to you and campus medical professionals when needed. A small tool kit is a smart idea. These tools always come in handy!
Toiletries:
Your college student should take enough to get started and have backups of certain items like toothbrushes. Also they will need a toothbrush holder and soap dish to put in their shower caddy. All other items can be bought or ordered as needed during the semester. Don’t forget to send prescriptions and figure out how your student will get necessary refills.
